Thanks Keith! That did the trick. I still have to get sendmail to deliver mail
to the new mail directory. Any clues on where i can start?

I run courier-imap with postfix, no issues to speak of. Your problem with 
Maildirs has nothing *_directly_* to do with courier-imap, except that 
courier-imap likes to play with Maildir.

In order to get the Maildirs, you need to run a program called maildirmake 
that comes with the courier-imap program. IIRC, the syntax is simply
        maildirmake <directory>

You need to ask someone else how to get sendmail to deliver to Maildirs, 
but I know that it's simply a matter of changing one line in the main.cf 
file for postfix, and something similar for qmail.
