I'm sure that this is a basic question for which I will feel suitably stupid
once I have the answer, but after scouring the FAQ, docs, readmes etc. I
can't find what I'm doing wrong.

Please forgive me if this is a case of not having found the right docs. Would
someone please point me to a doc with the right info, or give me a clue as to
what I'm doing wrong.

I am running Redhat 7.3. last night I installed imap and Squirrelmail. I ran
the perl config utility and set all the obvious params. (I don't really
understand the relationship yet, but I came to the conclusion that I need
imap available). I enabled imap and impas through xinetd.d. On the console, I
connected a web browser to myself at /webmail and got a login prompt. I
entered a valid user name and password, and got an error:

There was an error contacting the mail server.
Contact your administrator for help.

In my apache access_log I see the GET of /webmail/src/login.php and nothing
more. My error_log has no errors related to webmail.

Thanks, and I apologize again if I am asking something obvious that is already
documented somewhere, but I have searched for a few hours.
