I thought I would have to write a script that places the automatically created IMAP folders into mail/ but for some reason IMAP automatically puts them there anyway! I'm not sure how this would affect accessing them via external programs like outlook. Would they still look for /home/user/INBOX or /home/user/mail/INBOX? Anyway, it worked to hide all those nasty . files for me.
