When you signed up (and periodically since) you received an email
containing a link for where to change your subscription options, use the
link from that email, or go here and sign in:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/squirrelmail-users

Set 'Disable mail delivery' to On (Scroll to the bottom section), and
you'll stop receiving emails.

As for how to view emails, pick your favorite newsreader - Outlook Express
will work, as will Mozilla Mail, (not to mention Pan or slrn or.. ), and
use the gmane mail-to-news archives (nntp server: news.gmane.org,
subscribe to relevant squirrelmail newsgroups).

http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/MailingLists has links to http-based
browsing of gmane, but the viewing can be a little slow.

As far as looking for mail that's for you, the Subject Line is key. ;)
Make a good subject line, and it makes watching threads/searching for
topics, etc., MUCH easier. See here:
http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/en_US/GoodSubjectLine
for some tips on using good subject lines.

The disadvantage of monitoring via gmane is that it can be a little harder
to reply. You CAN reply through the gmane interface (i.e. by posting to
the newsgroup), but you have to intervene to tell gmane to actually try to
send it. I have found that using Mozilla Mail, you can just readdress the
reply and direct it to the list instead of the newsgroup - but it's a
manual process, and quite a pain if you forget to do it.. :-p

Hope that works for you, I've found it quite handy.
