I'm the author of the ldapuserdata plugin that allows saving the
preferences in an LDAP directory. Yes, the installation is a bit of
work, but it is pretty much straightforward. However, if you intend to
tweak it a bit more, you'd find your way in some Squirrelmail internals:
you'll need to learn which variable is for which preference setting and
what that setting is needed for.
Anyway, if you decide to go the LDAP route, I'd be willing to help you
out, if I'm able to of course.
Bear in mind that the LDAP way might save you from latency problems, and
LDAP reads are very fast and there is caching involved anyway, but LDAP
writes are the exact opposite! That's why I let it write the preferences
only on Signout, which might be a little awkward for some users,
depending on the situation.
Sorry to have taken so long to reply.
Just for the record, in my deployment, the "LDAP way" will be soon
online for some 10,000 up to 40,000 users of the University of Athens,
and for a whole lot more for the greek schools network. But since it's
not up yet, I'm not to say such big words about the outcome. Yet. :) We
are using Cyrus 2.1.latest, OpenLDAP 2.1.latest, Sendmail and
Squirrelmail 1.4.0 on Solaris.
Cheers,
