Hi,

I'm pretty new to this sort of thing, so go easy on me. I usually like to resolve my own problems, but this one escapes me.

Hardware setup:
PowerMacintosh behind a hardware router with ports 25, 80 and 110 open only.

Software setup:
MacOS X (10.2.6)
BIND
Postfix
Courier-IMAP
Apache (built in) with PHP 4.3.2 (no php.ini file)
Squirrelmail 1.4.1

Network setup:
There are other computers on the same local network as the server, but the server is the only computer that is open to the outside world, and then only by the three open ports on the hardware router. The server is also a DNS server for the local network, so that I don't have to remember local IPs.

All components except Squirrelmail work as I expect them too. Although I have been suffering some DNS issues from my domain name provider, but they've mostly cleared up now. However, I wasn't able to get mail from this mailing list sent to my address on this server. This is worrying to me as well, because it's been more than a week since I thought I fixed the DNS problems.

The main problem:
Squirrelmail works great on the local network, I can send attachments, heck, I can send. Squirrelmail also works great from some outside computers, but not all.

The problem is that when you click send, nothing is sent, and the page eventually times out with a "no reply" error. I think this is a proxy problem, but I'm not sure. One of the places where I've noticed a problem is my local university where they have a version of Squid proxy running. The other place is in Germany where I've been trying to connect a non-computer literate friend. He describes the same problem, but doesn't know enough to know if there is proxy in the way.

Interestingly, a simple PHP form that uses the built in mail() command works fine. Thinking it was a SquirrelMail problem, I've also tried IlohaMail (www.ilohamail.org), but this suffers from exactly the same problem. I'm afraid I'm only learning PHP, and I wasn't able to find the actual line of code where mail is sent in each system, but I suspect the problem is in there.

Can anyone help me fix this problem?
