If we did a database, it would be Oracle. MySQL is nice for many things,
but the absolute reliability and stability we require will push us into
our existing Oracle infrastructure.

Yup. I know that LDAP writes are expensive, but according to our LDAP
administrators we have such a robust and fault-tolerant system that the
writes shouldn't be a problem, even at the loads our system experiences
(About 200-300 simultaneous users at peak time).

Take that for what you will. :)

Seriously though, I don't expect it to be that big of a problem. Most of
our users are checking mail between classes or en route to another
location. I expect a BIG surge when we go live with it, then for it to
slack down to relative noise (Compared to the hammering our IMAP servers
take on a daily basis).

Agreed. The design phase is going to take a lot of time not only because I
don't know enough about LDAP at the moment (My focus is WebMail; we have
an entire team devoted to just LDAP), but it is uncharted territory for
everyone here.

Thanks for the links. I've also looked at Rolodap as well.

I wouldn't expect much out of me for a while. Design & requirements for
this will require a lot of work and a lot of meetings.

Maybe I'll let everyone look at our plan once we're close to beginning
implementation. Show you all how an academic institution works. :-D or :-(
depending on your point of view. :)
