SquirrelMail contains big number of options. Some of options (server side sorting, server side threading, number of installed plugins) might speedup or slowdown interface. If your SM v.1.2.7 was using server side sorting and 1.4.2 is not using it, you will see a very big difference. If you misconfigured 1.4.2 (for example, haven't set imap server correctly) - you will see speed difference too. Correctly configured SM 1.4.2 should be a little bit faster than 1.2.7 in most situations.
