I am having difficulty adding Japanese support for Squirrelmail, and I was hoping someone on this list might trigger an "ah-hah" for me. I'm running Debian 3.0 with Squirrelmail 1.4.2 with fairly vanilla settings; Courier IMAP and imapproxy on the backend.
I've gone through the instructions listed here, which match my own setup: http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/en_US/SupportingMultipleLanguages (with the exception of "--enable-mbregex", which "permits searching with multi-byte charset text" - but I hope I don't need that just to display stuff using php4.) When a user switches to Japanese, everything turns into random-seeming ASCII double codes on-screen. I'm using MSIE to test, with the Japanese EUC encoding set (the same one that I selected with locale-gen). The curious part is that the "help" section *does* display correctly. From looking at the .mo files, it seems that they both use two-byte codes. I don't see the difference between the two. Suggestions?
