1. "to hack"  - To interact with a computer in a playful and exploratory 
rather than goal-directed way.
"to crack" - To break into a system

2. try to find out how account was broken.
a) you were using some http:// address and person got password that you
entered there.
b) communications between webserver and imap server were not secured and
password was got from there.
c) you have stored your password in browser
d) your webserver or imapserver was broken
e) there was keylogger attached to computer you used to check email

3. secure your systems
a) use ssl enabled connections. https:// address instead of http://
b) if imap server and webserver are on different machines - use ssl
enabled imap connections

d) secure your servers

e) secure your workstation or don't use keyboard to enter passwords
