It should take you out of the compose screen.  It is 'slightly' broken
(URL problem) in 1.4.2 (it's on my list...), but it should still take you
out of the compose screen...  you must be having javascript errors???

conf.pl -> 3.  Folder Defaults -> 11. Auto Expunge -> yes/true

again, looks like you're having javascript errors or you are not using a
browser that is supported by the plugin (IE5.5+ and the latest mozilla
only).  if you can repost with any errors you're getting, it might help
