Then you just wasted your time.  Uninstall SquirrelMail, or install an
IMAP server.  If you had read the requirements, you'd know SM is an IMAP
client and will NOT work at all without an IMAP server.

You don't.  (And POP for webmail is pretty non-standard)  Bottom line: You
want to use SquirrelMail, you are going to need an IMAP server.  It
doesn't have to be local, you can use your ISP's server.  If you just have
a remote POP account, you can set up a local IMAP server and feed it mail
from your POP account using fetchmail or something similar.  It's not
ideal, but hey, what in life is?
