The only thing that automatically sorts folders by date is for the sent
folder:

you might be able to change it suit your needs

uh, sounds like you're using UW-IMAP (mbox)... things will get
tremendously faster if you switch to a 'real' IMAP server using maildir
format

just move them around in SM, no need to go to the OS unless you like
making things complicated
