I think you're confused, SquirrelMail is a webmail program that supports
IMAP.  It doesn't support POP3 mail which is probably what you are looking
for.  SMTP is the part of the e-mail process that allows you to send
messages.  The protocols you are wondering about are the ones that allow you
to retrieve e-mail.  So, squirrelmail is already using SMTP when you send
e-mail, and cannot be configured to use POP3.  Hope that clears some things
up for you.
