I don't think you'll find this is the fault of Erin's patches, or
anything you have in regards to the core squirrelmail, but more the
folder_sync plugin. Try disabling it, and see what happens, you won't
get the error, but I bet you will get the refreshes working again.

Hrm, the changes between 1.4.0 and 1.4.2 shouldn't break any
plugins... at least not that I can think of off the top of my head, so
you might want to start with an upgrade inline (as in install a second
copy side by side) and test.
