1. Get Russian translation and install it.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#wget
http://smstats.topolis.lt/releases/1.5.0-20040202/ru_RU-1.5.0-20040202.tar.bz2
...

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#cat ru_RU-1.5.0-20040202.tar.bz2 | bzip2 -d | tar -xv

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#./install
Please enter path to your squirrelmail installation: /usr/share/squirrelmail

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#cp images/* /usr/share/squirrelmail/images/

If you don't trust http://smstats.topolis.lt, wait for locales release on
SF (should happen within two-three days) or get locales module from cvs
https://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=311.

2. make sure that system ru_RU.UTF-8 locale is compiled. it should be
listed in /etc/locales.gen

Use "dpkg-reconfigure locales" and "locales-gen" commands to enable it.

3. check if Russian translation is working. If it is not - restart apache.

4. http://bugs.debian.org/squirrelmail
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=232944
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=232963
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=232995

5. I think, "cyrillic" is not charset name. If you need x-mac-cyrrilic
support - http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/squirrelmail/decode/x-mac/

Support of these encodings can be enabled by placing these files into
/usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/decode/

6. courier-imap does not need to be recompiled on Debian Sarge or Sid.
Only Woody suffers from "missing --enable-unicode" problem.
http://bugs.debian.org/159821

Link that you have provided does not talk about recompiling courier. It
only suggest same thing as I've suggested in Step 2. ru_RU.KOI8R is for
SquirrelMail 1.4.1 or older. from v.1.4.2 and v.1.5.0 squirrelmail's
Russian translation is in UTF-8.

7. If you are using English translation, you won't be able to reply to
Russian email without losing 8bit symbols. iso-8859-1 does not support
Cyrrilic symbols.
