The company I work for has been running exchange 5.5. We have had corrupt databases multiple times with this exchange server. It has been decided that this exchange server needs to be replaced. I have setup a postfix+procmail+dovcot-imap+spamassassin+squirrelmail server and have migrated some of our major exchange server users mailboxes over to this server for testing purposes. My bosses like squirrelmail allot. My next step is to let the users test it out. We are looking at going completely webmail based for the MUA in our company using squirrelmail. We have around 35 users and only 6 gigs of email. My guess is we send and receive as a whole on average about 300 emails a day total.
In alignment with other suggestions I suggest:
a) Qmail over Postfix b) Courier 3.0.3 over Dovcot c) What about server-side virus scanning? This is important, esp when you are using sq. mail alone.
Does anyone think going completely webmail based using squirrelmail for the MUA is a bad idea? Does anyone have any thoughts on this at all? Is there anyone in this mailing list that has done this before? If so I would love to hear about how it has worked out.
Again, in alignment with other posts...you must ask your users
what they use thier MUA for. At one of my sites with similar users/usage, I would find quite a fight to move people to squirrelmail
only. Mainly because of:
1) reminders, todo, calendar 2) squirrelmail is just slower (at least imho) 3) Sync with palm
I will be running this server on a PE2650, raid 5, single xeon 2.4Ghz, with 1 gig of ram. I think this server can handle what I need it for easy enough. Does anyone see this differently?
Another post suggested a backup solution. I couldn't agree more...I had
2 hard-disk failures in one day (and a NIC (bad day :( )) and lost 24 hours of email and people wanted to scalp me. I suggest Rsync over Dump any day. I used to use dump but it is slow and a huge pain to restore
from. You also have to worry about using a 64bit filesystem if your
dumps are big. My backup solution (which allows me to sleep peacefully at night) is something like this:
- /home is on a hardware raid-1 - nightly & weekly I backup to a different software raid-1. - nightly I backup with rsync through an SSH-tunnel to an off-site server that is also software raid-1.
Rsync is really cool ;).
Overall, in my similar situation I have given up on moving to squirrelmail-only and have instead settled for slowly moving away from Outlook and Outlook-Express in favor of Mozilla thunderbird. This is still something I cannot do with Palm+Outlook users but it is a small victory.
Good luck - post your success/findings...
