I got Squirrel Mail to access the area it needed on the mac by adding a symbolic link to the applicable ~/Sites folder.

ln -s /usr/share/squirelmail ~/Sites/webmail

Then you should beable to access it by

http://localhost/~user/webmail

if this works? then every thing is right with the system and its just setting up with the link in the right place for it to be visible for your applicable web page.
