Can it be used as a basic "home directory file" browser?

sure

Since stuff will need to be owned by apache:apache, I guess that trying to use it in such a manner wouldn't exactly work, eh?

it can work.... it does *not* need to be apache:apache, it can be user:apache

The Boss thinks that internally, users can access their $HOME via Samba, externally they can access it via this Squirrelmail plugin.

the boss isn't wrong

I believe this could introduce security issues.

yes, possibly. anything with write permission for apache is more risky. read the README file and install it carefully. note that a future version may include a suid binary that may (or may not) be more secure (ownership by apache not necessary).

(Basically, they think "Hey, mail server has space.. just put Samba on there!")

What can I do? =/

groan and just get on with it and when it gets hacked dig up the email where they gave the marching orders.
