You should also concider using a php accellerator.
Myself i'm using http://turck-mmcache.sourceforge.net/
which works fine.

If your users are on slow links ( i'm on GPRS a lot )
you could look into enabling compression in the web server.
I'm using Apache 2.048 and enabled the deflate module which
helps a lot when using browser that understand compressed data..

There are other stuff with IMAP servers that also culd be done
but i have not bothered yet..;-)
