I guess that if they support IMAP as well as POP3 that would also trigger
a filter that allows you to send mail.. Kind of stupid to support IMAP
and request that you also do a paralell POP3 to enable SMTP access..;-)

Otherwise..

If you already have set up SM on your host to be able to access your
mail from everywhere my solution there is to set up a IMAP server as
well on your SM host.

You could then use the POP3 fetchmail plugin to grab mail from the
webhost's POP3 server. This plugin can also be set to "leave mail on server"
if you require that.. You can also set it to check mail during folder
refresh and if you have a folder refresh every 3 min's that should work..

When that has happened you should also be able to send mail since
you are authenticated via POP3..

A little different approach if you are a programmer is to change
the POP3 fetchmail plugin to only login/logout and never grab any mail..
And configure it to check mail during folder refresh..

And yet a comment.. Do they support SMTP AUTH?
I found a note regarding setting up SM with this on
http://cvs.sf.net/viewcvs.py/squirrelmail/squirrelmail/doc/authentication.txt?rev=1.6
that you probably could follow..
