I have read plenty of posts regarding this problem and I studied http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/en_US/DataPermission and http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.squirrelmail.user/8849/
However, I still get the following error:
<<< Error opening ../data/default_pref Default preference file not found or not readable! <<<
Apache runs as nobody:nobody and PHP has safe mode disabled.
SM is in /home/blah/site/webmail/ - where site/ is the DocumentRoot.
This is in config.php: $data_dir = '/var/spool/webmail/data/'; $attachment_dir = '/var/spool/webmail/attach/';
Huh. spool dir...
Permissions for these are the following: drwx-wx--- 2 root nobody 2048 Aug 24 19:36 attach drwxr-x--- 2 nobody nobody 2048 Sep 1 23:38 data
What about permissions for nobody to get to /var or /var/spool or /var/spool/webmail?
:/var/spool/webmail/data # ll total 5 drwxr-x--- 2 nobody nobody 2048 Sep 1 23:38 . drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 2048 Aug 24 19:36 .. - -rwxrwxrwx 1 nobody nobody 48 Jul 27 2003 default_pref
As you can see, I don't have an user yet and therefore I can understand that SM needs write permissions for the data dir as the webserver user, but that's the case...
And also: I still have /home/blah/site/webmail/data/ with .htaccess, default_pref and index.php in there. Can I delete that directory? (Actually, I tried already and it makes no difference, it seems.)
What confuses me is that the error message still points to "../data/default_pref" and not something like "/var/spool/..." what I have specified. I changed the org. name just to make sure that my config.php is not ignored completely. But it still seems strange.
This happens because when it can't get to the default pref file in your data dir, it falls back to the one that comes in the tarball.
Any ideas are *greatly* appreciated. What am I overlooking?
