I'm using courier IMAP.

Is server side sorting something I do in the configuration of the IMAP server or in SM?

You don't mention what IMAP server you are using. Try enabling server
side sorting, see if that helps resolve your issue (only if your IMAP
server supports it). I'll look at working on the local cached version
at the weekend.
