An update:
I moved our SM installation to a brand new Sun 280, dual Sparc III processor, 4 GB RAM, doing nothing al all but SM. And I'm the only user. When I hit my inbox (and its 700 messages), I see the processor usage going up to as much as 4-5% used. I'm using a php accelerator, I've tuned the kernel, and even installed a plain vanilla SM installation with no db access and no plugins. Still CPU usage goes up when opening folders, and the larger the contents, the more it goes up. Solaris 8 is fully patched, and the apache is 1.3.7.

Is anyone else using a similar configuration? With or without similar problems?

All,
I have SM running on a Sun 280, dual processor, 4 GB machines, Sol 8,
apache 1.3.7, php 4.3.2. We're using a variety of plugins for ldap
connectivity, including some home grown (though removing them doesn't cure
the problem).

I'm seeing full CPU usage and load averages out of site once we have 300
or so simultaneous users. Several times the LA hit the 80s before I killed
apache.

Is this a configuration issue? I'm assuming that this hardware should be
hardy enough for even 1,000 simultaneous connections.
