The lack of server-side sorting and threading is the most likely culprit
for your problems. I highly reccomend moving to an IMAP server that
supports those features, if you can. (I understand that it may not be
possible.)

I haven't seen anyone else bring this up, but you should also test the
1.5.x versions. From what I understand, there have been a lot of
improvements in the code for those that should help your performance.
