Just an FYI for anyone out there who may get this same issue. I've been
battling it all afternoon. My configuration is as follows:

Fedora Core 3 installed with
        Fedora package of Dovecot 0.99.11-1
        Postfix 2.1.5-2.2.
        MySql 3.23.58-13 (for online_users plugin)

Installed from source
        Apache 2.0.52
        PHP 4.3.10.

Tarball from original server
        ../htdocs directory with squirrelmail
        /etc/dovecot.conf, postfix, etc.

My work today involved teaching myself the ins-and-outs of backing up my
current mail server and transferring everything (mail and all) to a new
server. I created an identical Fedora box, installed Fedora's dovecot and
postfix packages, did makes and installs of Apache and php, then copied over
my tarballs of the live system. Oddly enough, I really thought it would
work, and it would have, if I'd better documented my initial trials to get
the live system going. The problem that causes the error Mr. Barnum was
getting below is tied to an unsuccessful or incomplete configure for PHP,
causing libphp4.so to not work very well for Apache.

The configure for PHP that worked for me was as follows:
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --enable-xml
--with-mysql --with-iconv
And the key parameter here is the --with-apxs, and you will have to locate
it. If you did not build your Apache, you may not have it, in which case
you'll need the development package.

I searched the archives for this problem, and the messages below are the
only ones I saw directly pertaining, but I thought I'd offer this to help
anyone else who may run into it.

 Very true,

Unfrotunalty there was no real fix I figured out. I just downgraded
PHP to 4.3.6. I tried updating pcre from 3.9 to 4.5 and still no go. I
just installed all the RPMS for 4.3.6 and went with that. Version it did
not work with for me was 4.3.9 and 5.0.x

So care to help out other people with your supreme wit and publish what
you did to fix it? We gave you free software, the least you can do is
 contribute your fix(es).

SM is tested on an extremely wide variety of systems, including Apache2.

I personally have it running just fine on a nearly identical system.
So, yes, actually, it *has* been tested on such a system -- don"t be so
quick to make bad assumptions. And don"t be so accusational toward we
who give so much time for free to develop software you don"t pay a dime
for -- you are not going to inspire anyone to give you any help in the
 future.
