I removed dovecot, and installed the older version, that works.
After reading your post (above) I decided to try the upgrade again
making sure nobody was logged into mail....

The same problem resulted, so it's not caused by being logged into mail
while dovecot is updated.

I went back to the older dovecot version again,, added dovecot to my
up2date ignore list and will keep an eye open for another update. :-)
