It's hard for us to guess but your mail server knows. Check your maillog
or wherever courier-imap is logging to for the reason it's dropping the
connection. You may need to enable debug logging in courier. I know from
personal experience that courier is well supported by SM.

Is the mailbox you're trying to look at large? Have you tried enabling
server side sorting?
