You forgot to mention your squirrelmail version.

In some cases name of used SquirrelMail translation can help too.

LDAP entries are usually stored in utf-8 charset. Older squirrelmail
versions used xml functions that are limited to iso-8859-1 <-> utf-8
conversion. 1.4.4 and 1.5.1 uses squirrelmail internal functions. If there
are problems with them, can you provide more details?
