Yes. I ensured myself of the fact that only one IMAP server (courier
imapd) was running.

I'd say. Could there be a posibility that PHP might be involved? Since
we've somewhat outruled imap as the culprit, being it that mutt and
tbird just work like a charm...

Yet,

A04 STATUS
A04 NO Mailbox does not exist, or must be subscribed to.

I have once again ensured that the IMAPd i'm talking to, is the one
Squirrelmail is talking to.
