I now assume this is a bug in SM that has existed since version 1.4.1
It is not a bug in SM. SM does not specify https or http in the code anywhere at all. It is a server configuration problem. I think this has been discussed recently on this list, but I don't remember the problem off the top of my head -- you should search the archives yourself.
