I do wonder though how well squirremail works via a LAN. is 100ethernet good enough?
I don't think the LAN is my bottleneck; most likely, it is the disk I/O, and the processing by SquirrelMail (PHP & Apache).
I was considering having a frontend web server farm which access the rear-end mailservers but wasn't sure if the performance would be quite as snappy.
If your mail-servers used central storage (NFS or similar), you will still have a FS/Disk bottleneck. I imagine that you would want a big/fast NFS server and a bunch of mediocre mail/web-servers.
If your ultimate aim is to increase performance, I highly recommend Courier IMAP and the Maildir format.
Btw - try using imapproxy in this setup. Might help a lot! I certainly noticed a difference and it may possibly be even more marked for you on a split imap/webmail system.
I will check it out, thanks for the tip. Also, I used to use turck_mmcache as a php accelerator, and it helped, but I havn't re-implemented it since my last PHP/Apache upgrade.
At one of my other locations, I have a server that is nearly identical to yours (except, I only have 1GB ram). I use the same Courier + Apache2 + PHP + SquirrelMail setup there. I would like to do this same test on that site, but I don't have any users with huge INBOXs :).
