1.5.x is stable enough for use. I use it myself daily as my main email client. That said, if you're leery about using it in production, do a parallel install of 1.5.x (check it out with CVS for easy updates) and run it alongside your existing stable install. Just use a different data and attachment directory. If you don't have any problems, you'll know if it's stable enough for you.
