You might want to get some more info about what error 86 is. But I
might venture to guess that you are giving it the wrong username (w/ or
w/out domain info?) or that the auth method you chose in SM's conf.pl is
wrong.
When I did a telnet log on to IMAP, the username and password were in plain
text.
Squirrelmail is setup for plain text logon.
I forced an authentification failure (bad user name and a bad password, same error) in
Pegasus and got the "error 86" exactly like I am getting with Squirrelmail.
Wrong user name password combination, don't think so because I am using the same
credntials as I use for Pegasus and the telnet session. I know I am not the worlds best
typist so I did try multiple times.
I am thinking that it is something to do with the web server more than a problem with
Squirrelmail or the IMAP server.
Can you see what the exact username is that is being given to IMAP?
Maybe the username is being changed if you use some hack or something
like the vlogin plugin. Make sure to turn all plugins off when testing.
Also make sure your browser allows cookies or install the
cookie_warning plugin (I highly recommend it). Watch for a series of
several IMAP logins per one SM login and see which one of them fails.
Look for eveidence of pwd being lost on the 2nd try or similar... show
more logs and maybe someone can help
