Sounds like you need a network file system solution (plenty of options
out there, but beyond the scope of this mailing list) through which you
can access the file. If you have a multiple server system, I'm
surprised that you don't also have a more sophisticated way of storing
user data (which might be easier to configure with this plugin),
especially give that giving PHP *any* kind of access to /etc/passwd
isn't that good of an idea.

You mentioned about some nfs solution. Can you elaborate a bit on this ?
Google for NFS, GFS or similar. That kind of thing is pretty out of the
scope of SM and is largely dependent on what kind of network you have in
place. A better and more secure plugin to use for this might be the
change_password plugin, which can be pointed to your remote IMAP server
without having to follow up on any NFS-like solutions.
