With automatic folder refresh enabled I have no problems having it open
for days at a time. Your server administrator may have installed a
timeout plugin.

This isn't related to squirrelmail specifically, but any one that checks
an IMAP server for new messages would work. You'd have to verify with
your e-mail provider what your IMAP server is and whether you can check
it outside of Squirrelmail.
