I much prefer the current behaviour of SquirrelMail over what you propose. Quota problems can easily be fixed. (Disk space is cheap.) Performance problems would hurt me and my end users much more. If you really want to make life easier for your end users, give them a big enough quota. I routinely contact my users if I happen to see they use more than 50% of their quota, and propose an expansion.
