I don't know where you got the impression that it had to be installed
on the same server as the mail services.  SquirrelMail has options to
allow you to separate them.  As for your above error, it sounds like
you've not finished configuring SquirrelMail.  As I don't see any
details about your IMAP server, I cannot really make too many
suggestions, but my first would be to ensure you are using proper
defaults for certain options.  Start by running config/conf.pl and
selecting option D, and selecting your IMAP server.  Save, and try
again.  You might also want to check on the imap server itself, and
make sure the user has access to their own home directory, or the
directory where their mail is going to be stored.
