See the function ShowSortButton in functions/mailbox_display.php in the stable branch. I'd suggest simply changing your default left-column > width. Check Options > Folder Prefernces. I think you're reading it backwards. He said "right pane (message list)" and not left frame. He is probably referring to the table containing the messages now expands instead of staying the same width, and wrapping the content as necessary.
