Well, I've found the problem.  It looks like the problem occurs when the
"Show HTML version by default" option is set to "Yes".  I'm thinking
this option is related to the "View as HTML" plugin:

If I change that option to "No", the 895k message loads without
problems, no timeouts. 

Any ideas or advice on how to proceed?  Of course, leaving the "Show
HTML version by default" option off is one thing that can be done but I
don't know if that will be desirable.  Should I open a bug report
against the "View as HTML" plugin?
