Are you sure you're contacting the right place?  This sounds like an
issue with your configuration, rather than SquirrelMail.  Have you
tested another mail client to see if it can connect?  What about this:

# telnet masterip 143
A01 LOGIN "username" "password"
A02 SELECT INBOX
A03 LOGOUT

Where "masterip" is the front end server, and username/password are
your user/pass combinations.

- From your suspicions alone, this sounds like you probably want the
Cyrus lists, rather than the SquirrelMail lists.  Test your theories
with another mail client (or telnet as above), and see what results
you get.  Then address the right lists :)
