You have server side sorting turned off and mailbox is sorted. In
SquirrelMail 1.4.x internal php based message sorting is slow and uses
lots of memory. Its limit is somewhere close to 3k messages.

Fastest way to display mailbox with lots of messages is to make sure that
it is not sorted. Make sure that sort setting defaults to 0 or remove it
from user's preferences.

If server supports IMAP SORT extension, turn on server side sorting in
SquirrelMail configuration.

There are IMAP servers that might have issues with larger mailboxes even
when IMAP SORT is used, but their limit is a little bit higher than 3k
messages.
