It is a problem due to the lack of an integrated architecture/design.
According to the software author's website, the Sqwebmail and the
Courier-IMAP evolved as two separate pieces of software and originally never
designed/architecture together. Each piece of software evolved separately,
re-using some code and/design. But still never had an integrated design. I
won't blame the author (Sam), since he has displayed a lot of other good
qualities like sharing his software on the Internet, taking the pain to
answer user's serious questions, and displaying the willingness to look into
ways to improve his software.
As per a recent posting by the author, he is currently looking into the
problem of consolidating the passwords at a single place, that is at
"system" level. I am separately forwarding that posting to you. If you have
the guts to install experimental software, the author has the latest piece
of beta code that incorporates this feature.
I evaluated many different softwares for MTA, IMAP and webmail. I found only
one (free) software that incorporates the "maildir" feature. Also, if you
have virtual domains and has only one IP, then "Courier-IMAP" seems to be
the only way to implement a serious email system with multiple virtual
domains. I know that the user's of Sqwebmail are primarily of Qmail fans.
But for MTA there exist a good other choice called "postfix"
(www.postfix.org) and it has a decent security oriented architecture.
The sqwebmail has a very good interface. The postfix is a very good MTA.
These were my choices after serious software evaluations. So, courier-IMAP
and its "authuserdb" seems to be the only way to implement virtual domains
(with one single IP) using freely available software. Carnegie Mellon
University's Cyrus-IMAP is a very secure IMAP that uses its own
authentication and mail handling mechanism, but has the limitation on email
user names. That is, you cannot have more than one "Joe" as your email user.
Thanks,
Mathew Simon

Subject: two password
Hallo...
My users access to mailbox in two manners:
1) Client IMAP (Netspace Messenger or Outlook)
2) Sqwebmail
Client IMAP uses password of machine's user
Sqwebmail stores password in file "sqwebmail-pass" (located in
~/Maildir/) and user can change password: the result is that for
accessing mailbox can exist 2 password, one for Sqwebmail and one for
IMAP Client.
How can I modify sqwebmail configuration, if possible, for having one
password ??? (sqwebmail should use in any case machine password, I
think...)
Thanks. Massimo Quintini
