Thanks for the commits @miconda.
It seems that we identified another problem though. some distribution now offer
openssl with built in zlib support that i am assuming links directly in
`liz.so` even for the static version. Even with old `make` commands, `trixie`
fails to build
`trixie` and `sid` are some of those, and probably newer ubuntu are affected as
well.
