not x86, but ssh compiles up fine on sparc. the principle should be
the same though.

assuming you're running vanilla solaris 7,
you'll need to make sure you've got the system package:
system SUNWxwplt X Window System platform software
installed & that you've got /usr/openwin/bin in your path before
running configure. xauth lives in /usr/openwin/bin.
otherwise you'll see the error message:
checking for xauth... no
configure: error: configuring with X but xauth not found - aborting
