Sounds like an unrelated problem to SSH. Are you using FTP via SSH (e.g.
sftp)?

Two things to check:

1. Make sure that user george's shell is listed in /etc/shells   This is
required for WUFTPD and NCFTPD.

2. Check the file /etc/ftpusers and make sure user george isn't listed.
This also applies to WU and NC.
