Unfortunately our hosts are set up with FQDNs, so I don't think that's the
problem we're seeing here.

I agree: I downloaded and built the 2.1beta in vague hope of our hanging
problem having been discovered and fixed ... but it still hangs just the
same.
The thing I find strange is that it very occasionally _does_ work and
establishes a hostname-authenticated connection. However try it again
straight afterwards and it (consistently) hangs. Keep trying, and it keeps
hanging. Come back to it sometime later: it works again (once!).
This is why I keep thinking about some sort of caching or locking problem
that times out after a while.
