The license.dat file turns an evaluation version (which is basically just
the same binary without a license file) into a licensed version (either
commercial or non-commercial, depending on the contents of the license
file). The idea is that you don't necessarily need to re-download the
binary if you have been evaluating and then purchase a commercial
(or non-commercial) license. This makes life easier for people with slow
internet connections.
You can import the license.dat file in one of two ways:
- under the "Help" menu there is an "Import license" selection that you
can use to import the license.dat into SSH (by browsing the file
system to select the appropriate license.dat file).
- You can also cut-and-paste the license.dat file contents into the
import dialog, which does the same thing. This may be the easiest
way to get the license from your web browser to the application.
The new license becomes effective next time you start SSH.
If you download either a commercial or non-commercial version from
http://commerce.ssh.com/, the license file will be automatically embedded
into the downloaded binary, so you don't need to separately import the
license file. The purpose of this is to make installation as easy as
possible.
