It could be either of these two conditions:

1) Something like "idletime" or "idleout" is set in yur personal, (or the
system-wide) shell start-up files, i.e. ~/.login and ~/.cshrc for csh, and ~/.profile
for [ba]sh, and their respective /etc/ counterparts. 

2) It could also be a deamon running on the server, looking for idle sessions, that
only an admin can override. :):)
