I was having the exact same problems on with Red hat 6.2. (I've temporarily 
switched to the ssh2 from ssh.com until I have more time to work on it)

I'd much rather use OpenSSH if I could get it working nicely.
For what it's worth, I used src.rpms and compiled them as i686 (don't know 
if that matters or not)

I get the error when I try to ssh from the host (garnet) to the same 
host(i.e. "[jw@garnet ~]$ ssh garnet")

If I remember correctly I was also getting that error with putty, from Win2k.
